Italics where there is no italic button

Instagram, X, TikTok and YouTube comments have no way to slant text. These italic letters are separate Unicode characters, so the slant comes with the text when you paste it. Use them for book and film titles, a quote, a gentle emphasis or a name that should look a little more personal.

The italic styles

Small things worth knowing

Numbers stay upright in the italic styles, because Unicode has no italic digits. The small h is the Planck constant symbol โ„Ž, which Unicode uses as the official italic h, so it may look a touch different in a few fonts. As with every style on this site, screen readers do not read these letters as words, so keep italics to short phrases.

Questions and answers

Why is the italic h different?

The italic small h was in Unicode before the other math italics as the Planck constant symbol โ„Ž (U+210E), so the generator uses that character. Without it the h would be a missing box.

Are there italic numbers?

Unicode has no italic digits, so numbers stay upright in Italic and Sans italic. Bold italic uses bold digits.

Serif italic or sans italic?

Italic matches the serif look of most documents. Sans italic matches the clean sans serif text of apps like Instagram and X, so it blends in better there.
