How to flip text upside down

Type in the box and the first row shows your text turned 180 degrees: ʍop ǝpᴉsdn. Copy it and paste it into a message, comment or bio. The second row mirrors your text left to right instead, as if seen in a mirror.

Flipping takes two steps. Each character is swapped for one that looks rotated, such as ɐ for a, ǝ for e, ʇ for t and ¿ for ?, and then the order of the characters is reversed. That way the text reads correctly when someone turns their phone around. Emoji and characters without a flipped twin stay as they are, in reversed order.

What upside down text is good for

Limits

Unicode has no official upside down alphabet. Lowercase letters come from phonetic symbols and look convincing everywhere. Capital letters borrow from rarer sets, such as the Lisu script, so a few may show as boxes on older devices. When in doubt, flip lowercase text.

Flipped text is unreadable to screen readers and search engines. It is a gag, so keep it away from anything people actually need to read.

Questions and answers

How does upside down text work?

Each letter is replaced by a character that looks like it turned 180 degrees, such as ɐ for a and ǝ for e, and then the order is reversed so the text reads correctly when the screen is flipped.

Why do some capitals look off or show boxes?

Unicode has no complete upside down alphabet. Some capitals borrow from rarely used scripts, which older devices may lack. Lowercase letters are the most reliable.

Can I flip the text back?

Paste flipped text into the box and copy the Upside down style again. Flipping twice returns most letters to normal.
